An imaging apparatus includes, a zoom lens and a field stop for determining the extent of an imaging field, arranged at an object side of the zoom lens. Zooming from a short focal length end to a long focal length end is performed by moving each of the lens groups to the object side, and the following conditions are satisfied:3.0<ft/fw 0.7<IH/fw<0.91.75<ft/fl—G1<2.52.8<fw/sk—w<4.1where ft is the focal length of the long focal length end, fw is the focal length of the short focal length end, IH is the maximum image height, fl_G1 is the composite focal length of the first lens group, and sk_w is the backfocus at the short focal length end.
