A modified silica support having a polar phase bound to its surface and suitable for use for chromatographic separations, having the following formula:wherein, m=0-20; n=0-20; p=1-50; X is sulfonyl, carbonyl, carbamoyl, or oxycarbonyl; R1=H, alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl groups; R2=alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl groups; and R3 and R4 are alkyl, aryl, hydroxyl, or alkoxyl groups or groups including oxygen atoms cross-linked to silicon atoms. Also, a polar silane intermediate to make this support.
