Toothpaste is a jelly-like mass (toothpaste or gel) for brushing teeth. Previously, it was prepared on the basis of chalk, modern toothpastes are mainly made of silicates.

Toothpaste

The first mention of toothpaste is contained in an Egyptian manuscript of the IV century AD. BC, her recipe was a mixture of powdered salt, pepper, mint leaves and rooster flowers.

Previously, calcium carbonate was used as an abrasive in pastes, but it was gradually abandoned because it is not chemically inert and reacts with other components of the paste. In addition, the crystalline structure of calcium carbonate is close to needle, and therefore traumatic to tooth enamel. Now it has been replaced by weak abrasive agents - silicon compounds (aerosil, aluminosilicate, silicon dioxide, silicon hydroxide, dicalcium phosphate).
