The Kitchen was founded as an art collective in New York City, New York in 1971 by Woody Vasulka and Steina Vusulka, and officially incorporated as a non-profit two years later in 1973. The Kitchen is an art and performance space that supports all forms of art by frequently giving early and mid-career artists opportunities to establish themselves, and take unusual creative risks with their art work. Notable artists who have worked with The Kitchen include: Vito Acconci, Constance de Jong, Gary Hill, Kiki Smith, Charles Atlas, Lucinda Childs, Elizabeth Streb, Bill T. Jones, and board members Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, and Meredith Monk.
