Abstract

The accelerator cavity design cycle for the Electron-Ion Collider is excessive, taking weeks for a single design to be evaluated computationally, and this is dramatically slowing down progress towards designing the EIC cavities. The problem is that the simulations are computationally large, and the currently available software is not able to take advantage of the hardware available to JLab researchers. Thus, there is a need for a cost-effective, robust simulation tool that would combine high performance computing with better gridding to speed up the simulations. This problem is being addressed by developing a workflow and needed software to allow for use of high- performance computing within the JLab development cycle. This would bring Tech-X HPC solvers and gridding to bear on this problem. The proprietary Tech-X variable grids will allow these systems to be solved with many fewer computational cells. The solvers will allow much faster simulations. This will require the creation of “glue code” and analysis code. The codes will be as easy to use as desktop codes using the Tech-X private cloud solution. Tech-X will install its tools on the JLab computers and make them available to the EIC team. Tech-X will set up the simulations and improve its interfaces and analysis tools as needed. Tech-X will develop the “glue code” to fit this into the JLab workflow and provide analysis software as needed for JLab to carry out its needed design work. Tech-X will further develop scripts for automatic optimization. All of this software will be open source. The proposed tool will streamline the design of accelerator cavities and other electromagnetic systems. The techniques developed here will be applicable to simulations for DOE mission areas, including particle accelerator design.
