Stuffstr is a London-based, privately-held technology company that provides digital recommerce solutions to consumers and retailers, to reduce fashion industry waste and promote the growth of the circular economy. Stuffstr is designated a public benefit corporation (B Corp) and was founded by John Atcheson in 2014, who served as CEO until 2020. Stuffstr's stated mission is to "reduce waste by dramatically increasing the reuse of unused stuff" and "aims to fundamentally change the way we purchase and even think about the things we buy, resulting in a dramatically more sustainable world."
Stuffstr provides a data-based platform through its website to buy back unwanted apparel and accessories from consumers and feed the pieces into either the second-hand clothing market or into material recycling streams. Stuffstr partners with clothing brands and retailers to pull data on the products in their inventory, going back five years, into the Stuffstr platform. When a consumer no longer wants an item, they are able to search for it on the platform and instantly see what the company will pay to buy that item back. Stuffstr collects the item from the consumer, takes it to their sorting facility, and puts it into second-hand sales or recycling, depending on the quality of the item. The post-sale data collected on the items returned and the condition of those items feeds back to the brands and retailers.
In 2018, LAUNCH selected Stuffstr as one of nine Circular Innovators for 2018. In 2018, Stuffstr was among twelve startups selected for the fourth edition of the Fashion for Good - Plug and Play Accelerator Programme. In April 2020, Stuffstr was named one of the top 50 global retail tech startups of 2020 by RWRC. Stuffstr is a member of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's Circular Economy 100 (CE100) Network, a global platform bringing together companies, innovators, and regions to accelerate the transition to a circular economy.
