Cryogenic air separation technology is energy intensive and requires expensive infrastructure leading to high costs. Skyhaven Systems, LLC proposes an alternative technology, targeted for use with the next generation small, modular gasification plants 1-5MW), based upon magnetic microchannel arrays operated at/near room temperature) with the intent to augment or replace cryogenic-based distillation. The Phase I effort will be targeted to validate oxygen separation efficiency from an air stream. Magnetic microchannels will be fabricated, optimized, and tested for effectiveness. COMSOL modeling software will be utilized to examine the microchannel design/performance and guide development and optimization. Additionally, a prototype multi-element microchannel package will be designed. An initial cost analysis will be performed including installation, operating, and manufacturing cost elements along with a scale-up plan for a potential Phase II program. The development program is targeted for use in small-scale, modular coal gasification plants. Air separation technology, of the type being developed, is commonly used in a multitude of other industries including: to increase production efficiency in steel, rocket fuel, glass, chemical and metallurgical processing and healthcare applications.
