After receiving his PhD from the University of Sussex, Sir Peter joined the Jo Eberle group as a Research Fellow from 1972 to 1974 in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Rochester and in the Department of Physics and SLAC at Stanford University, USA.
1974–1976 as SRC Fellow at the University of Sussex; and in 1976 he was a visiting fellow at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA.
In 1976 he became a Jubilee Fellow at King's Holloway College 1976-1978 University of London, then received a SERC Fellowship from 1978 to 1983, first at the RHC from 1978 to 1979, moving to Imperial College in 1979.

Peter was the first to predict that atoms in the presence of intense laser fields would emit waves corresponding to high harmonics, and led the development of a code to describe the effects of such fields on atomic systems.
In 2005, for his work in the field of optical physics, he was knighted in honor of the Queen's birthday.
Knight was Chairman of the UK Department of Defense's Defense Science Advisory Board until 2010 and a member of the Science and Technology Assets Council until 2012.
