There are embedded control systems throughout our combat systems, including thousands of programable logic controllers (PLCs) installed in various defense systems such as ground based defense, aircraft, land vehicles and combat ships. These systems are not typically connected to a network yet are vulnerable to cyber-attack through other various mechanisms. There is currently no way to quickly and easily verify the cyber security stance of these systems. This proposal describes ELSSE (Embedded Logic Systems Security Evaluator), a system that provides an engineer with a toolset to baseline cyber security of an embedded system and enables minimally trained technicians’ mechanisms to easily verify the hardware and firmware installed in these systems, as well as mechanisms to conduct penetration tests against the binary objects extracted from these devices.
