Silicon (chemical symbol - Si, from Lat. Silicium) is a chemical element of the 14th group (according to the outdated classification - the fourth group of the secondary subgroup, IVB), the third period of the periodic system of chemical elements of D. I. Mendeleev, with atomic number 14.
The simple substance silicon is presented in various modifications. In the amorphous form it is a brown powder, in the crystalline form it is a dark gray, slightly shiny nonmetal, which is the second most common chemical element in the earth's crust (after oxygen).
It is very important for modern electronics.
