SBIR/STTR Award attributes
The purpose of this SBIR is to develop a carbon nanotube metal matrix composite that can used in the manufacturing of small caliber sabots for use with long rod penetrators. In phase one, Additive Manufacturing has been used to make carbon nanotube aluminum metal matrix composites that met threshold requirements and have achieved 95.8% of the objective modulus and 97.5% of the objective strength of the program. Development work remains to achieve elongation requirements in phase. In addition to long rod penetrator weapons, carbon nanotube metal matrix composite technology has applications to four of the five Army modernization priorities.
