SSI will develop a remote sensing system to carry out two important functions associated with using high energy lasers to counter unexploded ordnance, mines and other explosives. The first function is to gauge the effectiveness of the laser weapon on individual targets based on the thermal signature produced from the laser/target interaction. SSI has experience building spectrometers for a variety of remote sensing problems will use that experience to design one for the wide range of emission spectra associated with this particular problem. The second function is to measure laser irradiance exposure to the laser operators from diffuse or potentially specular reflections from the target. SSI has extensive experience making instruments to measure laser in-band irradiance in the presence of background and clutter radiation. SSI will adapt the sensor design to the mission for the high-power lasers used for the problems addressed in the solicitation. A combined in-band and out-of-band signature system will be delivered with a graphical user interface displaying results for the target engagements.
