Epinephrine and other medications are sensitive to oxygen. When the compounds comes in contact with Oxygen, which is unpreventable, the compound starts to degrade. SMS is commonly used as a preservative to reduce oxygenation. However, it is impossible to prevent the leak of oxygen into the epinephrine within an auto-injector or prefilled syringe. Even small amounts of oxygen over time cause degradation of the epinephrine. Rx Bandz proposes adding SMS, a oxygen- reducing agent in the hydraulic fluid. This will allow manufacturers to to reduce the amount of sms in the commonly used 1 mg in cartridge extends from 4-5 months in the customer’s hands (after manufacture, storage and shipping) to 18 months.
