The Air Force has identified a need for a Wireless Instrumentation System (WIS) to supplement or replace the complex, bulky, and inaccessible wired systems that currently reside within aircraft today. The need for connected systems is vital for many critical and non-critical flight systems but the routing is complex and the sensors that are onboard to monitor the aircraft may be located in inaccessible areas that make installation and maintenance a difficult endeavor. To solve these issues, the QuickFlex team proposes the development of the Optivora – No-Line of Sight Wireless Instrumentation System. This system will mitigate these issues through the use of a robust wireless sensor network that can replace the wired systems currently used and achieve the same functionality and reliability needed for these systems. The proposed system will take advantage of well-defined protocols, less complex modulation schemes, and Multi-In Multi-Out (MIMO) within a Software Defined Radio (SDR) that will lead to a robust system capable of communicating in an obstructed environment without a clear line-of-sight, suitable for deployment in aircraft.
