The prairie dog is a rodent. They are native to North America and live in holes. Despite the name, the prairie dog is not a dog, but is instead considered a squirrel.
Prairie dogs are highly social animals. The prairie dog has many enemies, and they bark to alert the rest of their town of danger. They are also susceptible to the bubonic plague.
In addition to barking, they also make another kind of vocalization known as the "yahoo."
