Portofino is located east of Genoa on the Gulf of Tigullio. It is in the northern region of Italy called Liguria and is along the area known as the Italian Riviera. Due to its proximity to the water, it is a popular vacation spot during the summer. The summers are short in Portofino due to its location in the north, and its winters are usually longer.
It is uncertain the exact time that Portofino became inhabited, but its proximity to the water and natural shelter from winds made from the landscape allowed for people to live there early in history. The town is mentioned in ancient texts under the name Portus Delphini. It became a Roman colony and was still under the jurisdiction of the Holy Roman Empire in the Middle Ages. Over the next several centuries, the town was considered owned by several organizations, families, and regions, including the Republic of Genoa, the First French Empire, and the Kingdom of Sardinia. In 1861 it became a part of the Kingdom of Italy and remains part of Italy today.
