Abstract

Quantum buffer is a necessary component for realizing scalable multi-node quantum networks, but still not commercially available. Although extensive developments on quantum buffers have been reported, they all lack practicality. To date, no buffer has been successfully converted from laboratory concept to a deliverable device. The main objective of this project is to develop and produce deliverable quantum buffer devices having a performance level that is useful for the community to advance the field of quantum communications and networking. Based on our recent breakthrough in obtaining unprecedented fiber- optical switch performance of high speed and low loss, Photonwares Corporation in collaboration with Northwestern University proposes to realize an all-fiber optical quantum buffer that would be capable of precisely delaying quantum signals discrete photonic qubits or continuous-variable field quadratures) in transparent optical quantum communication networks. The proposed fiber optical buffer has the desired attributes of long and accurate delay time, dynamically variable delay time, ambient operation, compact size, and low cost. The program leverages Photonwares’ over 20 years of expertise in novel fiber optical device development and manufacture for field deployment. The Phase I is to demonstrate the feasibility of the novel quantum buffer device by performing design optimization, prototype build, test, and validation. Paths to further performance improvements will also be explored. Quantum communications is a revolutionary technology that could open up a whole universe of applications that are not possible with classical communications, including provably secure communications, teleportation for quantum communications when only a classical channel is available; and connecting quantum computers together. One of the key drivers for this developing market opportunity will be the future 6G technology market solutions. Quantum communications will alter how we do business in the future. It will fundamentally change how we secure data and security in our technology-driven world. Some see it as one day displacing the Internet in its current form. This game- changing technology is not only critical to our nation’s security but also to its future economy. A market report by MarketWatch predicts the global quantum technology market will reach nearly $18B by 2024 in which quantum communications market will grow with the highest CAGR.
