He began his professional career in the Sumy club Frunzenets-Liga-99. In total, he played 53 matches for the team in which he scored 17 goals.
In the summer of 2003, he moved to Dynamo (Kiev). At the same time, Gusev received an invitation to the Ukrainian national team, and soon became a midfielder for the main team of the national team. At the 2006 World Cup, Oleg scored the winning goal in the penalty shootout against Switzerland.
Almost immediately after the end of the performances, he switched to coaching, becoming an assistant to Yuri Moroz in the Dynamo youth team. In July 2020, he joined Mircea Lucescu's coaching staff as an assistant.
