A STTR Phase I contract was awarded to OFF-WORLD, INC. in August, 2022 for $249,993.0 USD from the U.S. Department of Defense and United States Air Force.
OffWorld and New Space New Mexico together propose the development of a semi-autonomous robotic capability to perform repositioning of Resident Space Objects (RSOs) to support Active Debris Remediation (ADR) efforts and emerging commercial On-orbit Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing (OSAM) applications. During the STTR Phase 1 we will refine and validate our CONOPS in preparation for subsequent phases, with the objective to significantly prove the scientific and technical feasibility and commercialization potential of our concept. OffWorld’s offering is unique as we intend to leverage our demonstrated machine learning and automation capabilities in swarming free flight space robots. New Space New Mexico will leverage substantial commercial and academic relationships and resources to validate market potential and scientific viability. The OffWorld business strategy and technology development roadmap are well aligned with Orbital Prime objectives. Our current CONOPS is designed to support an array of developing commercial markets in orbit and beyond, and our long-term objective is to field a wide variety of industrial robotic capabilities across the solar system. While our vision is expansive, our business plan is pragmatic and achievable. We are primarily funded through existing revenue generating contracts that enable development of key functions and capabilities necessary to support emerging commercial markets on earth and in space. Successful development of this intelligent, robotic swarming capability will produce significant results. These outcomes include (1) Increased capacity, speed, and efficiency of future OSAM applications, (2) reduced risk for space operations based on the ability to clear debris from desired orbital regimes, and (3) lower operational costs compared to less automated solutions. Additionally, development costs can be largely absorbed by commercial investment due to numerous related commercial use cases. Of note, OffWorld’s proposed solution is directly related to two DOD Critical Technology Areas in addition to ‘Space Technology’. As defined by USD(R&E) these include ‘Trusted AI and Autonomy’ and ‘Integrated Network System-of-Systems’.
