Due to growing requirements for weather exploitation across a wide variety of mission applications, coupled with high perishability of the environmental data, the dissemination of data for use in weather impact analysis is putting an increasing strain on the bandwidth connecting the AFW to its consumers. Additionally, the AFW Enterprise has not yet taken full advantage of emerging DoD cloud platformsThe proposed Weather Analysis-as-a-Service (WA3S) system provides an innovative approach to address current and future challenges associated with disseminating growing volumes of weather data by shifting the focus of AFW services from data dissemination services to data exploitation services that support intelligent mission analysis, providing clients with actionable answers to mission weather queries and mitigation options for potential weather impacts.Composed of a rich set of analysis services, WA3S is a cloud-native approach that leverages data locality and brings the analysis to the data. This paradigm promises to dramatically reduce bandwidth utilization compared to redundant data dissemination for weather-mission analysis use-cases. The WA3S services will be both authoritative and flexible, allowing clients to request analysis products based on a variety of trusted algorithms.Utilizing cloud services for weather impact analysis will enable the development of modern, efficient mission applications.
