NextGen Aeronautics (NextGen) is proposing to advance state-of-the-art (SOTA) wireless instrumentation systems technologies for Air Force to pass data without line of sight within a metal aircraft. We are proposing a modular wireless data transfer system to be built on NextGen teams extensive knowledge and experience of building miniaturized modular sensory systems and a series of legacy programs developing wireless sensor technologies. Implementing proposed wireless communication introduces a number of challenges such as guaranteeing reliable transfer of the data and time synchronization of the remote nodes. The proposed modular wireless system is designed to demonstrate the feasibility to at least transmit 2 signals wirelessly around impediments of various size, shapes and locations. NextGen will identify candidate wireless protocols and select the one suitable for inside fuselage applications, select feasible solutions that satisfy the figures of merit, and compare selected solutions with COTS solutions in Phase I. NextGen goal is to produce prototype sensory system to be evaluated by Air Force within three years. Consistent with the goal, the focus of the program is on bridging the identified development gaps at system level.
