The Aquarium in New York was first opened on December 10, 1986 in Manhattan in Battery Park . It was the first Aquarium in the United States. The first director of the Aquarium was Dr. Tarleton Hoffman Bean, who was the best expert in ichthyology. In the first years of its existence, only 150 specimens of animals were presented in the aquarium. The most famous director, zoologist Charles Haskin Townsend
, helped to significantly increase the collection of exhibits of the Aquarium.(Charles Haskins Townsend). During Townsend's time, the aquarium became the most attractive museum in New York. Note that the first US Aquarium functioned until 1941, it soon closed due to emergency construction of the bridge. All Aquarium residents were relocated to the Bronx Zoo. The inhabitants were able to return to the premises of the Aquarium only in 1957 due to the protracted construction of the new premises.
