Ultrashort pulse lasers (USPLs) have attracted significant interest for a variety of military applications. NP Photonics proposes to develop a USPL system at 2 microns by taking advantage of our mature fiber laser technology and innovative laser technologies based on highly doped glasses. The proposed USPL system has the advantages of compact size, high reliability, and ruggedness. In this Phase I program, we will investigate the feasibility, and study the risk, of developing USPLs using our highly doped glass laser technologies. A femtosecond USPL system capable of producing < 30 fs pulses with 1 J energy at a repetition rate of 50 Hz will be developed and characterized in Phase II.
