Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA) is the machine learning laboratory of the University of Montreal. MILA was founded by Prof. Yoshua Bengio. It is spearheaded by leading world experts in machine learning and deep learning namely, Prof. Yoshua Bengio, Prof. Aaron Courville, Prof. Pascal Vincent, Prof. Simon Lacoste-Julien, Prof. Laurent Charlin, Prof. Roland Memisevic and Prof. Christopher Pal. It is dedicated to understand the fundamentals of learning and intelligence.
MILA is world-renowned for breakthroughs in developing novel deep learning algorithms and applying them to various domains. MILA researchers have pioneered the field of deep learning and deep neural networks both discriminative and generative and their applications to vision, speech and language. Many innovations leading to the rise of popularity and success in deep learning were invented or co-invented at MILA. Its innovations include, but are not limited to, major contributions to layer-wise unsupervised pre-training, deep supervised rectifier networks, generative neural networks, theory and advances in recurrent neural networks, automatic hyper parameter tuning, neural machine translation and theoretical analysis of deep neural networks.
MILA consists of a powerhouse of researchers in addition to the faculty. The group includes, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral students, master’s students and scientific staff members working as software developer and specialist programmers in deep learning. It is one of the largest academic laboratories fully focusing on deep neural networks and their applications.
