In 1997-2004, he was the co-owner and head of the Yukos oil company. He was arrested by Russian authorities on charges of embezzlement and tax evasion on October 25, 2003. At the moment of his arrest, he was one of the richest people in the world, his fortune was estimated at $15 billion. In 2005, he was found guilty of fraud and other crimes by a Russian court. Yukos underwent bankruptcy proceedings. In 2010-2011, he was sentenced to 14 years in a penal colony on new charges; taking into account subsequent appeals, the total sentence imposed by the court was 10 years and 10 months, the sentence actually served was 10 years and 2 months, since Khodorkovsky was pardoned by President Putin in December 2013.
