Microsoft Authenticator

Microsoft Authenticator is a technology used for two-factor authentication (2FA), also referred to as two-step verification or two-step authentication, when logging into accounts or applications. Microsoft Authenticator is downloadable as an app on both Android and iOS and provides one-time access codes not only for Microsoft accounts and products but also for other sites and products that use two-factor authentication. It also provides password-free login to Microsoft products and sites and account management for multiple sites or apps simultaneously.

Microsoft Authenticator was launched in August 2016.The Microsoft Authenticator app replaced the Azure Authenticator app.

Two-factor authentication adds security by using a second step after a password during the login process. The Microsoft Authenticator uses more than one method for the second verification. One method uses a mobile device that is secured by the user with a fingerprint, face, or PIN (personal identification number) verification. Another method is a code generator. The Microsoft Authenticator works with any account that uses two-factor verification and supports the time-based one-time password (TOTP) standards.
