LOUISE BROOKS

She was born on November 14, 1906.

American silent film actress.

She became popular in the United States with her first major role in American Venus (1925), which made her a sex symbol. And in 1928 her participation in the film by Howard Hawks "A Girl in Every Port" brought her popularity in Europe. At this time, the German director Georg Pabst has about two years looking for an actress for the role of Lulu, the heroine of a popular play by Franz Vedekinda "Pandora's Box. The film, however, was not well received at the time and failed miserably.

The rapid development of sound cinema was immediately reflected in her work. Cut off from Hollywood, speaking neither French nor German, she was not in demand in the new cinema.

In 1931 Brooks was forced to return to the United States, but the 23-year-old star, being in the prime of creative force, ceased to be invited for major roles. In 1936 she returned to the screen, but starred in the occasional role. And after the western "Stagecoach Robbers," Louise Brooks out of the cinema forever.

Living in poverty and almost complete isolation, she was doomed to complete oblivion. But in 1955, director of the French "Cinemateca" Henri Langlois at the celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of cinema, made a surprising announcement: "There is no Garbo. There is no Dietrich. There is only Louise Brooks! This was the beginning of a revaluation of the actress.

Louise Brooks died of a heart attack in 1985 at the age of seventy-eight years. In the last years of her life, the actress was engaged in film criticism. Three years before her death she released a book of memoirs, Lulu in Hollywood.
