Karagozian and Case, Inc. (K&C) has developed a modeling and simulation (M&S) framework for predicting the energy release from structural reactive materials (SRMs) subjected to high velocity impact and blast loading. The framework is sufficiently general to predict the energy release for all three classes of SRM systems, which are: 1) metal-fuels, 2) thermites, and 3) intermetallics. The M&S framework predicts the condensed-phase reactions that can occur in the material due to its mechanical and thermal state. If the loading is sufficiently large, the framework predicts the fragmentation of the SRM and the subsequent reactions that take place due to burning of the fragmented particles. The reactions for the particle burning in the model are governed by the size and temperature of the SRM particles. In addition, the framework continues to compute the mechanical and thermal state of any large unreacted SRM fragments until they are further fragmented due to impact.
