Intrapreneurship is a system by which an employee within an established company is able to play the role of entrepreneur to identify a problem within an organization, form a team, and work to solve that problem, typically with financial and human resource backing from the organization.
The term is a portmanteau of "internal" and "entrepreneur" and its etymology illustrates the role intrapreneurs can play within larger organizations.
Intrapreneurial teams share many characteristics with entrepreneurial startup teams:
- Intrapreneurial teams are formed around solving a specific problem or narrow set of problems experienced by an organization
- The teams are often small and have relatively flat organizational structures
- Although intrapreneurial teams are typically funded by their parent organization, their budgets are often small and constrained. This means they have a limited amount of time to accomplish their goals.
Intrapreneurship is one facet of corporate innovation strategy. Other aspects of that strategy could include corporate venture capital, corporate sponsorship of accelerator and incubator programs, operation of internal research and development (R&D) facilities.
