ICON is an advanced construction technologies company developing and using 3D printing robotics software and advanced materials for building homes and space-based structures. The company was founded in 2017 in Austin, Texas, by Alex LeRoux, Evan Loomis, and Jason Ballard.
Vulcan is Icon's flagship robotic construction system, developed to 3D print homes using less water and resources than the traditional construction process. The system includes a printer and "Magma," the automated system that feeds advanced materials to the Vulcan printer. Magma is responsible for blending "Lavacrete," ICON's proprietary construction material, automatically from the provided ingredients. Magma adjusts ingredients like water and other additives based on local weather conditions. Additionally, the construction system can be controlled from a mobile application by onsite workers.
ICON launched a project called "Project Olympus" to develop a space-bound construction system using natural resources found on the moon. The project aims to use the moon as a hub for space-bound architecture projects for developing livable spaces on other planets and the moon. The project received a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award and additional funding from NASA.
