Abstract

Aircrew modernization programs, such as Air Soldier, focus on improving Aircrew survivability and mission effectiveness and offers a major step forward for the US Army with the introduction of advanced electronic systems integrated with the individual aviator ensemble. A key to achieving these goals is the integrated power, data, and communications links that connect the body borne equipment that make up these critical SA systems. While these enhanced capabilities will, ultimately, make the Army Aviator more informed, capable and survivable, they present some significant challenges for system wearability, comfort and performance. Nowhere is this challenge more magnified than in the area of the Personal Area Network (PAN) cables and connectors. To meet this critical need, Human Systems Integration, Inc. (HSI), a leading developer of Wearable Electronics products and solutions, will develop and implement a new PAN and connector system to ergonomically, ruggedly and reliably interconnect the complex electronic functionality of the modern Aircrew ensemble. This objective PAN and connector solution will be extremely low-profile and conformal, provide the requisite electrical performance, and prove to be extremely rugged in the typical Aircrew environment. It will also meet Aircrew equipment flame retardant standards and withstand ensemble laundering procedures.
