HBC is a resource of human gastrointestinal bacterial reference sequences established by researchers at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, Wellcome Genome Campus, Hinxton, UK. It is a comprehensive set of 737 whole-genome-sequenced bacterial isolates, representing 273 species, of which 105 are novel, from 31 families found in the human gastrointestinal microbiota. The HBC was reported to increase the number of bacterial genomes derived from human gastrointestinal microbiota by 37%.
