Hieromartyr (ancient Greek Ὁ Ἱερομάρτυρας, Latin sanctus martyr) is a martyr from among the clergy, that is, those ordained to the rank of bishop, priest or deacon, who suffered for his confession of Jesus Christ.
The difference between a holy martyr and a martyr lies in the presence of the first holy rank. Hieromartyrs do not constitute a special line of saints and are commemorated at the liturgy along with other martyrs. In Orthodoxy, on the proskomedia, for them, as well as for other martyrs, the fifth particle is taken out of the nine-part prosphora.
