To address the Air Force’s need for a structured-light scanning solution for automated identification and repair of defects on outer mold line (OML), Hedgefog Research Inc. proposes to develop a new OML Anomaly Characterization System (OACS). The proposed OACS is based on structured light-based metrology, proprietary 3D surface stitching algorithms, point-cloud analysis for part-to-model comparison, and corrective machine paths generation for a commercial spraying/sanding system. OACS offers rapid, high-resolution optical scanning on OML parts of various sizes and automatically determines corrective actions for defect correction, thereby enhancing production throughputs and affordability. In Phase I, HFR will demonstrate the feasibility of OACS by performing proof-of-principle demonstration of all key aspects of the technology, including high-precision metrology, defect identification, and optimal corrective machine path selection to reach TRL-4. In Phase II, HFR will demonstrate seamless system integration of OACS in relevant production environment to reach TRL-6.
