Abstract

GaN Corporation proposes a product named RF-SAFER that is a weatherproof device that alarms users to high RF exposure and documents exposure events for medical diagnosis and treatment. Our device operates from 300MHz to 40GHz, providing ten levels of exposure in each of a to-be-determined number of RF bands. Indications include a real-time warning of both safe and hazardous level exposure and a permanent indicator of exposure for use by medical personnel after exposure occurs. Our innovative design operates without a battery power source, significantly reducing design risks associated with military specification requirements for soldier-worn systems, electromagnetic susceptibility, cybersecurity, and environmental protection. We are confident our final design will exceed size, weight, power, and cost expectations. GaN will leverage significant proven expertise in antenna design by leveraging our RF experts, including a subject matter expert with multiple antenna design patents and an antenna design author. GaN will also leverage on-going projects reproducing RF threat weapon signatures, including having current access and in-place expertise on existing classified threats. GaN Corporation proposes Phase I research that will translate existing literature on RF exposure biological effects and dangers, in combination with research on existing RF threats, to develop exposure sensitivity requirements. Our research results will bin the spectrum to identify exposure frequency to the end users using both the RF biological effects research and research into existing RF threats. We will ensure our binning provides the knowledge needed to provide an appropriate medical response to different exposures to different frequencies. We will also ensure our binning provides enough SIGINT to classify or even identify the threat encountered. Our Phase I proposed activities also include evaluating our innovative indicator approach, designing and testing our antenna solution, and breadboarding our detection circuitry design. A successful Phase I will result in significant confidence in our proposed design, supporting a Phase II that will prototype a complete solution ready for the transition into an acquisition program.
