Overview

Fruitvale Station is a dramatic biographical film written and directed by Ryan Coogler and following the true story of 22-year-old Bay Area resident Oscar Grant II on the last day of 2008, during which the real-life Oscar Grant was fatally shot at the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) of the same name (Fruitvale Station). The film debuted under the title Fruitvale at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival where it would win the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film. It was further screened at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, where it won the Award for Best First Film. Fruitvale Station would be see a theatrical release on July 12, 2013.

The film follows Oscar Grant (played by Michael B. Jordan) as he works to clean life and support his girlfriend (Melonie Diaz) and young daughter (Ariana Neal) after having spent time in San Quentin prison. Fruitvale Station uses flashbacks to show the day in which Oscar Grant brought his young family to watch firework's on New Year's Eve, while following a linear narrative of an altercation he gets into on the train on the way home. The altercation results in a tragedy as Oscar Grant is fatally shot by police.
