The driller occupation refers to oil and gas well operators controlling the operations involved in drilling and servicing oil and gas rigs. The driller is often referred to by people working in the oil and gas industry as the person who is 'on the brake' because they operate the drawworks brake using long-handled lever. Drillers are responsible for the efficient operation of oil and gas rigs and the safety of rig crews.
Drillers control the operation of drilling and hoisting equipment while supervising the rig crew. Becoming a driller typically requires several years of experience working on rig sites. Several years of experience is typically required because drillers are responsible the safety of their rig crew and the efficient operation of the rig site which requires a deep understanding of how oil and gas rigs operate.
A driller must be able to perform each of the jobs of their rig crew and be capable of controlling all major rig systems. Drillers operate pumps, drawbacks, and rotary table using the console control room consisting different gauges, control levers, rheostats, and electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic instrumentation.
