Daniel Keyes (August 9, 1927 – June 15, 2014) was an American writer who wrote the novel Flowers for Algernon.

The short story and subsequent novel Flowers for Algernon are written as reports on the condition of a mentally retarded man, Charlie, who undergoes an experimental operation and briefly becomes a genius before the consequences tragically wear off. The story was originally published in the April 1959 issue of Fantasy & Science Fiction and published in an expanded novel in 1966. (who won the Academy Award for Best Actor) and Claire Bloom. Keys also received the Hugo Award in 1959 and the Nebula Award in 1966 for the story.
Three more novels by Keyes can be classified as science fiction: The Touch (1968), about the tragedy of a man who fell ill with radiation sickness, The Fifth Sally (1980) and Till Death Do Us Part (1998), in the center of the narrative of which is a double murder in Florida.

Daniel Keyes was born on August 9, 1927 in New York, in a family of immigrants from Ukraine. After the war, he served in the Navy for three years, then left the military, graduated from Brooklyn College and received a bachelor's degree in psychology. In the early 50s, the future writer worked for some time as a junior editor of a literary magazine, a photographer in a fashion magazine, taught English at school and taught Sunday writing courses. At the same time he graduated from the correspondence department of Brooklyn College with a degree in Anglo-American literature and received a master's degree. After that, he left New York and taught creative writing courses at Wayne State University.
