May 1st Seungnado Stadium (Korean: 릉라도5.1경기장?, 綾羅島五月一日競技場?) is a multifunctional stadium located on the small sandy island of Neungnado in Pyongyang, North Korea. It is the second largest stadium in the world[2][3][4][5] with a total area of 207,000 m², designed for 114,000 spectators. The Strahov Stadium in Prague, which has non-standard dimensions and is designed for 220,000 spectators, is currently not used as a stadium, being a training base[6].
Built in 1989 to host the XIII Festival of Youth and Students. Currently, the arena is used for home football matches of the DPRK national team, some athletics competitions, but its main purpose is the mass festival "Arirang". The stadium can accommodate 114,000 people, making it the largest stadium by capacity in the world. All seats are seated and individual[7]
The name of the stadium comes from the island of Seungnado on the Taedong River, on which it is located, and the International Workers' Day - May 1. The design feature of the May 1st Stadium are sixteen arches forming a ring, because of this, the stadium is shaped like a magnolia flower. The petal-shaped roof covers the stands and the eight-story stadium building. The highest part of the roof rises 60 meters above the ground[8].
