Catherine of Austria, Queen of Portugal , was born on January 14, 1507, in Torquemada, Palencia . She held the citizenship of Portugal and was a Queen consort by occupation. Catherine was the daughter of Philip I of Castile and Joanna of Castile . She married her first cousin, King John III of Portugal, on February 10, 1525 .
Catherine and King John III had nine children, but only two survived early childhood: Afonso, Prince of Portugal (1526) and Maria Manuela, Princess of Portugal . She was also the mother of Manuel, Prince of Portugal (1531–1537), Luís Filipe, Prince Royal of Portugal, and João Manuel, Prince of Portugal .
Catherine became known for her role as the Queen of Portugal as the wife of King John III, and as regent during the minority of her grandson, King Sebastian, from 1557 until 1562 . She had the occupation of a regent . Catherine of Austria, Queen of Portugal, passed away on February 12, 1578, in Lisbon .
