Cold weather exposure causes unique problems, including the loss of hand function and dexterity. Perhaps this is no more true than with rotary wing airborne operations where aircrews are constantly exposed to extreme cold temperatures. There are no "safe to fly" products that provide enough warmth and meet SWaP-C goals. The objective of this effort is to develop a lightweight, low profile, low energy Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) electronic heater for use in airborne, and other, operations with the goal of warming extremities to the point of maintaining temperatures and dexterity throughout mission duration. A proven, lightweight PTC heater has been used in multiple commercial segments (automobile seat heaters, floor heating, medical sensors, and more) for many years and has progressed to the point it can meet multiple Warfighter needs without stressing logistics or putting additional burdens on the Warfighter.
