Bloomfield Robotics

Bloomfield Robotics is a Pittsburgh-based agricultural technology company. The company is a spinout of the Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute. Bloomfield Robotics was cofounded on June 24, 2019, by then-AI lead Harjatin Baweja, chief scientist George Kantor, and CTO Tim Mueller-Sim. Former RoadBotics CEO Mark DeSantis has served as Bloomfield's CEO since 2019.

Bloomfield Robotics utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) and specialty cameras to monitor crop growth and help achieve higher crop yield. Bloomfield's camera system, called Bloomfield FLASH, is designed to collect high-definition images of crops in any agricultural environment. The FLASH stereo camera then analyzes the collected images using the company's cloud-based deep learning software and extracts measurements such as yield, plant maturity, or evidence of disease. Bloomfield provides this information through their plant assessment service, BloomAI, allowing customers to make necessary adjustments and hopefully prevent possible crop loss. Customers are able to use the service at their discretion, a move that Bloomfield says makes their assessments more cost-effective. Bloomfield's current customer base consists of eighteen vineyards across the US, France, and Italy, as well as a blueberry grower based in Peru.

Bloomfield Robotics has raised over $5.7 million in funding as of 2022. The company most recently closed a $1.8 million seed round on December 9, 2021. Investors in the round included Japanese manufacturer Kubota Corp., one of the world's largest tractor producers, as well as PAX Momentum and SVG Ventures. A significant part of Bloomfield Robotics' funding has also come from grants. Bloomfield most recently received a $1.3 million grant from NASA. The grant is slated to be awarded in three increments, two of which are due in 2022.
