Brooks began his investment career as an Investment Adviser with WheatFirst Securities. After seven years, Brooks took over as Regional Manager of Marion Bass Securities in 1997. Brooks became Director of Investment Banking and subsequently CEO of the firm at 38 years old. Brooks participated in or led many local underwritings including Syquest, Crescent State Bank and First Carolina Bank. In 2001, Brooks negotiated the sale of Marion Bass Securities to Jospephthal & Co., which is today Oppenheimer & Co.
Brooks founded Southern Capitol Ventures in 2000. He first funded three IPOs which were ChannelAdvisor, SquareOne Bank and Motricity. Subsequently, he funded WeddingWire, an online wedding platforms.
In August 2016, Brooks accepted the role of leading Capital Investment Companies.
In 2017, Brooks created the Carolinas Index, a proxy for public company performance in North and South Carolina. The index tracks the performance of the 75 largest companies in North Carolina and South Carolina on an equal weighted basis.
