Zaharias had an illustrious career receiving numerous awards. She won gold medals in the 80-meter hurdles and javelin throw at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games and a silver medal in the high jump event . She was also named Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year six times: in 1932, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1950, and 1954.
In golf, Zaharias won the LPGA Tour Money Winner in 1950 and 1951 and the LPGA Vare Trophy in 1954. She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974 and posthumously awarded the Bob Jones Award in 1957. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2021.
