The Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) is a Shenzhen-based medical and healthcare technology company with a broad number of initiatives. One of its stronger departments is genomics technology and it has created technology to sequence DNA in less than 24 hours.
The company has various departments, such as its science department, which manages the BGI platform as well as research initiatives. The technology department in focused on developing technology for fields of study such as human disease and genomics. It also has a diagnostics department includes clinical testing and in vitro diagnostics.
In 2020, the company utilized its real-time fluorescent RT-PCR kits to test residents in China for COVID-19. The test can deliver results within hours, thus isolating patients with the virus sooner. BGI also developed technology to monitor mutations of the virus using a metagenomic sequencing kit.
