AvaWatz will use an existing early-stage commercial interactive medical advisor and reporting system as the foundation for a specialized Tactical Combat Casualty Care software tool, called GALEN. GALEN is designed to be used primarily by trained medical and paramedical personnel, but also by warfighters with minimal medical training; one goal is to improve the quality of directed care in austere operational environments, including those in which no communication to external resources is possible. GALEN will create a continuously updated record of a casualty’s condition and treatment history, from first response at or near the point of injury to the casualty’s arrival at a definitive care facility, and will transfer that record seamlessly en route along the chain of care. The focus is on treatment of those casualties whose injuries are life-threatening or so severe that the soldier cannot return to combat. GALEN’s Virtual Assistant User Interface provides hands-free data input using speech-understanding software as well as still and video imagery and biomedical sensors. The system integrates readily with standard Electronic Medical Record systems, and its modular architecture enables it to adapt to new or specialized medical information and changes in treatment best practices without reprogramming.
