Born January 9, 1943 in the village of Kozmo Demyanovka Tambov district of the Amur region in the family of a worker. Graduated with honors from the History and Philology Faculty of the Blagoveshchensk Pedagogical Institute (1963); postgraduate studies at the Department of Humanities Research (OGR) of the Institute of Economics and Industrial Production Organization (IEiOPP) SB AS USSR (1965).

From 1965 in the Siberian Branch of AS USSR/RAS: Candidate of Historical Sciences, head of museum (1968), deputy director of Institute of History, Philology and Philosophy (IPhPh; 1970-1976). Since 1983, Director of the Institute of History, Philology, and Philosophy; since 1990, Director General of the United Institute of History, Philology, and Philosophy; since 2000, Director of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography. - In 2000, he became Director of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which was later spun off from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In 1974-1983 he worked in Komsomol, party bodies and higher school: the chairman of the Council of young scientists, candidate for the Bureau of the Central Committee of Komsomol (1974, without leaving scientific work), the Secretary of the Central Committee of Komsomol (1976), the Secretary of the Novosibirsk regional committee of the CPSU (1979), Rector of Novosibirsk State University (1980-1982). Since 1997 he was deputy academician-secretary of the History Department of RAS, since 2002 - academician-secretary of the History and Philology Department of RAS.

He worked at Novosibirsk State University since 1964: Assistant Professor (1968), Acting Head of the Department (1972), Professor (1973) and, since 1982, Head of the Department of General History. He was also a lecturer at the Department of Archaeology, where he also taught a number of seminars and special courses on archaeology. He also developed and taught special courses, such as "Application of Natural Sciences in Archaeology" and "Ancient Cultures of the Far East". He was the head of archeological circle, took a direct part in realization of students' scientific archeological conferences. He was a member of Academic councils of NSU and GF.

Under his scientific management 12 doctoral and 46 Ph.D. theses were defended.

He was also a member of the Presidium of Soviet Academy of Sciences (since 1981), Chairman of the Joint Academic Council on the Humanities (since 1983), and a member of the Presidium of Russian Academy of Sciences (since 2002). Member of the National Committee of Historians, Board of Russian Humanities Foundation (since 1994; in 2001-2005 member of the Higher Council of Experts). Editor in Chief of the journal Proceedings of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences. Series of History, Philology, and Philosophy (1983-1994), and International Journal of Archaeology, Ethnography, and Anthropology of Eurasia (since 1999). Since 2002, member of the editorial board of the journal Herald of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Full member of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (1998), Corresponding Member of the German Archaeological Institute (1984), Honorary Professor of the Arizona University (USA; 1994), Tomsk State Polytechnic University (1998). He was awarded the title of Honorary Researcher by the Institute of Prehistory of Chungbuk National University (Korea; 1994).

Laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation (2002), the Lenin's Komsomol Prize (1972), the national non-governmental scientific Demidov Prize (2004), and the Acad. M.A. Lavrentiev Prize (2005), non-state Triumph Prize (2005).

Awards: Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1982), Order for Merit to the Fatherland, IV class. (2003), Order of Honor (1998), Polar Star (Mongolia, 2006); Gold Medal of Honor "Siberia Heritage" (2007).
