Allen Newell was born on March 19, 1927, in San Francisco and died on July 19, 1992, in Pittsburgh. He was a citizen of the United States and had various occupations including psychologist, computer scientist, mathematician, and physicist. Newell was educated at several institutions including Lowell High School (San Francisco), Stanford University, Princeton University, Carnegie Mellon University, and Tepper School of Business.
In 1975, Allen Newell received the Turing Award for his contributions to the field of computer science. One of his notable works was the Information Processing Language. Newell was a doctoral student under the guidance of Herbert A. Simon. Throughout his career, he also advised a number of doctoral students including Hans Berliner, Richard Fikes, James Gillogly, Frank Ritter (professor), Peter A. Freeman, Bonnie E. John, Milind Tambe, and Paul C. Rosenbloom.
