Alexander Gunzburg is one of the leading experts in the field of molecular biology and genetics of pathogenic microorganisms. The main areas of scientific research of the Institute, supervised by Gunzburg, are: molecular mechanisms of interaction between pathogenic bacteria and the human body; mechanisms for the formation of epidemically significant strains isolated both from natural foci and during outbreaks of hospital infections based on the study of pathogens of infectious diseases using modern genomic technologies; creation of diagnostic test systems for the identification of pathogens of infectious diseases based on polymerase chain reaction; creation of the concept of a dormant (uncultivated) state of pathogenic bacteria, which allows pathogens of especially dangerous infections to form endemic natural foci; substantiation of the need for molecular genetic monitoring of pathogens of especially dangerous infectious diseases;
