SIGSPATIAL is a special interest group (SIG) of ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery; the group focuses on research related to spatial information. This can apply to algorithmic, geometric, and visual considerations such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems). The group is aimed at supporting researchers, engineers, and students in their research of spatial information technology.
As an organization, SIGSPATIAL hosts conferences, publishes newsletters, and distributes awards. Memberships give access to these offerings as well as reduced registration rates for conferences and subscription to the SIGSPATIAL bi-annual newsletter. SIGSPATIAL gives out a variety of awards including: Ten Year Impact Award (a paper is chosen from their first conference, that has proved itself valuable over time) Best Paper, Best Poster, Best Demo, Best Programming Contest Solution, Student Research Competition Undergraduate Winner, and Best Fast Forward Presentation. In addition, there are several runner-up awards.
The Association for Computing Machinery's SIGSPATIAL International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems is an annual conference and part of a series of events and workshops that first began in 1993.
SIG Spatial is one of The Association for Computing Machinery's (ACM) special interest groups (SIG). There thirty-eight special interest groups that have been started by ACM. ACM is global community of computing educators, researchers, and professionals. The Special Interest Group Governing Board is Chaired by Jen Palsberg. ACM was established in 1947 and is a volunteer-led, member-funded organization.
